Cradle of Rotary Wing Aviation

This exhibit is prominently featured in the museum’s entrance lobby and helps explain why the American Helicopter Museum and Education Center is located in West Chester, PA. The exhibit chronicles the rich history of rotary wing development in the Philadelphia area including the first rotary-wing aircraft flight in America in 1928; the gathering place for the world’s “First Rotating Wing Aviation Meeting” at the Franklin Institute in 1938; where more early aviation and rotary-wing heritage exists than almost any other place in the world; where many of America’s rotary-wing pioneers lived and worked; and the location where rotary-wing aircraft design, development and manufacture continues today at AgustaWestland, The Boeing Company, Piasecki Aircraft and Sikorsky Aircraft.
